Walls You Build Yourself

Lightcycle - browser version of the arcade game

Your cycle leaves a wall of light behind it, as do the enemy cycles - one on the first wave, three after. No cycle can stop or reverse, and any wall or trail, even its own, ends it. Make every enemy crash to clear the wave; a lost life starts it again.

Cutting the Arena in Two

A trail stands until its cycle crashes, so every second of play takes open space away. Strong play is territorial rather than aggressive: get your wall between an enemy and the larger open region and it is beaten while both cycles are still moving. Dividing a space according to which point is nearest is called a Voronoi partition, and it is a genuinely general picture - the same construction describes the grain boundaries in a cooled metal, where each crystal grew outward from its own seed until it met its neighbors and stopped. Your trail is a grain boundary you are drawing on purpose.

How to play

  • Arrow keys turn at the next crossing; Space runs three times as fast, and there is no brake.
  • Hug your own wall to spend as little of the open area as possible.
  • Cutting across an enemy's likely path is worth more than chasing it.
  • Once the arena is split, count the space on each side - the smaller one loses.
