Crossing

Waiting for a Gap

Crossing - browser version of the arcade game

A road of traffic, then a river of logs and turtles, then five homes to fill, with about half a minute on the clock for each frog. The road kills you on contact; the river kills you when nothing is under your feet. The same screen asks two opposite questions - avoid what is moving, then ride it.

Real Gaps Are Not Evenly Spaced

Here each lane's cars are evenly spaced and move together, so its gaps come round like clockwork. Real traffic is not like that. Cars arriving independently at a steady average rate bunch into tight clusters with long empty stretches between, and the crossings you can actually make are the rare long gaps, not the typical ones. Past a certain density the flow stops being a stream at all and jams, with waves of stopped cars traveling backward through it. That transition is sharp rather than gradual, which is why a road that worked yesterday can be solid today after a small increase in the number of cars.

How to play

  • Arrow keys hop one square at a time; there is no way to move continuously.
  • On the river the log carries you - stand still and you drift off the edge.
  • Fill all five homes and the next level brings new lanes, and later a crocodile, snakes and otters.
  • Time left when a frog gets home pays a bonus, and so does a fly in the home; a crocodile's head in one is fatal.
